These rejecteion letters are apparently mechanically generated. Most of them are emailed, yes emailed. Nowadays a potential employer doesn’t see fit to ‘waste’ a .44 stamp to reject you:

Oh my! USA Jobs is like the lottery!

That’s classic. I was laid off from Big Law in 2008 along with all of the other 1st and 2nd year crew, none of us have found law spots to date. During 2008 – 2009, I was cocky and assumed I could get another firm gig – nope. I then acted under the myth that baby boomers always force into our brains that government jobs are EVERYWHERE and are easy as pie to get. After literally 100s of applications and networking like a mofo, nothing, nada, zilch. I even applied at the spot where I clerked in DC and got a personal recommendation letter from the director of the agency – nothing, not even a courtesy rejection letter. An aunt at an agency then revealed the ugly truth: most of the time a specific candidate has already been selected prior to the post on usajobs.gov. Well that makes sense. The funny part is that my mom still reverts back into denial and says that her own sister is full of crap and that I just need to network more (according to CNN). I hate that word, and guess what even WASPy folks like me can’t get jobs despite connections because, um, there are no jobs to be had.

I can tell by your response you knew that these rejection letters are from the federal government. When you apply for jobs and sign into your account your application history is there and you can look to the right column as to whether or not the agency even bothered to upload your application for consideration. Just imagine what older (and I don’t mean middle-aged or elderly!–the in betweeners are going through). McRejection for McLaw. I’ve accepted my own theory that the only reason why they advertise a vacancy is to keep their budgets up and pretend they don’t either discriminate or subscribe to nepotism. What a farce.

    • Tired of Trying Said:

Not such a big surprise. There are no jobs to be had – you are absolutely right. I’m right there with you on applying to 100’s of places. Lost track of the count, but know that I’ve interviewed over 30x in the past year or so – nothing, but rejection letters, calls, and e mails…or no response at all. This is a joke. I have education, experience, and everything that it takes to land a good job, but haven’t. The hunt is starting to seem hopeless, bills are piling up, lawyers are threatening court to collect, and the circumstances of my life are beyond annoying. All of it is an enormous joke – definitely a chapter that I do not ever want to repeat. Cannot wait until it’s over. 😡
