    Attorney jobs with the federal government are notoriously hard to get; far harder than Biglaw. I would go so far as to say that an attorney job with the federal government is the hardest attorney position to obtain. Sadly, too many people (law school career offices, parents, etc.) think that government jobs are an easy, reliable fallback position when private practice fails, and that the government is an easy place to obtain employment. The opposite is the case.

    This shows once more that this “profession” is GLUTTED. I have seen prospective law students get upset, when I point out this reality. Often, they retort, “I’ll work hard and make law review.” (As if this still ensures legal employment.) Other times, the idiots will respond, “Even if I can’t hired by a large firm, I’ll go work for the government. Maybe I’ll be a public defender or work for JAG.”

    Such moronic answers simply illustrate that the person has no clue about this job market. JAG can pick and choose from JDs, who graduated from top 5-10 law schools. Imagine the fierce competition for these positions.

    I am confident your speculation is inaccurate for the following reasons;
    1. jobs that hire those already in government specify in the announcements: a. current federal employees only; b. specify if you are a displaced federal employee c. specify if you qualify for interagency transfer.
    2. I’ve worked for the government before I entered the private sector
    3. The reality is that they hire someone they knew/had connections REGARDLESS of whether they worked for the federal government in the past or currently.
    4. It is my understanding that decisions for hiring are already made before the job vacancy is posted, and it only done so to comply with federal regulations/keep their budgets.
    Welcome to America. Want freedom, ok in exchange will provide debt slavery with no real opportunities for you to get a job for your basic costs of living, let alone repay student loans. False advertising.

    As a current government employee, I can speculate that these positions were given to individuals already in the system. We have a saying, the first government job is the hardest to get.
