For years trying these tactics have not and still do not work:  Informational interviewing with former professors, colleagues, referrals and attorneys I met at conferences didn’t help, going to different cities and knocking door to door to speak with legal secretaries and receptionists, parking lots of different businesses, and handing out one’s resume provided no leads though I get “You have all this” and “you seem great”, discussing the issue with volunteers at non-profits only to be provided the “you are doing everything right” or “that’s a shame,” registering at different state employment agencies though providing free services and undergoing verbal abuse and contempt on a daily basis by civil (oxymoron) workers who find out how educated you are leads to them not wanting them to help you or to see you succeed as they complain about how they did not “get” a chance to go to university and it doesn’t matter because these places focus on retail, IT or blue collar jobs that have no intetest in you; professional outreach workshops and networking provided few leads all the while continuously applying to jobs blind via online and postal mail; including those advertised at federal agencies, which provided no compensation at the federal Assistant Attorneys Office to only be told you are eligible; qualified; ranked among the best qualified and have the credentials and more but [herein lies the secret-you’re not white; you’re not male; you’re not IVY League; you don’t have connections; how would it look for us politically–in other words, for whichever reasons, we do not want YOUR kind here]

Don’t take a gamble with your future, especially if you’re a minority. Sallie Mae doesn’t care how hard you try, they will devour you.

Unemployment Programs; Black Unemployment…

On May 11, 2010 I posted my thoughts on black unemployment and some organizations call for the United Nations to address black unemployment.  Well, the Economic Policy Institute presented a  more in depth statistical analysis: released: 

Uneven pain—Unemployment by metropolitan area and race dated June 8, 2010. Between this and another previous post we can conclude:  Blacks are the most affected by the economic recession and unemployment; thus will most likely be affected long-term socially. Ironically, Blacks and Latinos had an increased in education attainment but higher unemployment rates.

From the May 11, 2010 post [ United Nations: People are calling the international community to the plight of Black Unemployment] on this blog in which I quoted:  “But the ugly truth is that the road to success that the degree they’ve earned was supposed to open up is littered with potholes that their education cannot overcome. This year, blacks who have earned a bachelor’s degree and higher have a higher unemployment rate than whites who have only obtained a two-year college degree. And blacks with college degrees earn substantially less than white college graduates.” [ Black college graduates face road full of potholes, May 11, 2010, Statesman Journal updated version provided in a different website:  Black college graduates face a road ahead full of potholes | lancastereaglegazette.com | Lancaster Eagle Gazette ] Even with these facts and statistics I see not a regression but a potential full-blown manifestation of hatred as many of us have read in history. When a country is in decline which most obvious sign is its economy and international trade, those who are members of unpopular groups, you know those who are not deemed by dominant society as “one of us” will be blamed for it.

Let me state a brief insight: For minorities to try to do things the “right way” attain education, work towards a goal, only to be overlooked for a lesser educated white potential employment is psychologically damaging. It is a reminder that racism is inherent in American culture, government and politics. When push comes to shove, minorities as well as a few whites are expendables. This leaves a resounding whisper in the minds of those largely affected that “America has not changed.”

Should we assume that the abismal statistics provided by EPI are accurate, this gives additional insight to news regarding unemployment benefits. According to an article posted by the Huffington Post on June 14, 2010; more people continue to lose unemployment benefits due to Congress’ failure to extend it and other programs. As Blacks maintain the highest percentage of unemployment across the nation, rationally, they are the very ones who are relying on unemployment benefits for survival, though many are likely educated and not necessarily blue-collar workers. Simply fathoms the mind, for those who believed that they could taste the American Dream but only to be met with sometimes polite rebuffs that reinforces a cyclical society of unbalance and discrmination. I have read that some economists are expecting riots in urban areas because of the economic crisis. For those who believe that living in the suburbs shields them, let me remind you that plenty of Section 8 housing residents and others are spread throughout the suburbs and that some suburbs are dependent and surround major urban areas–you know where many professionals commute to work. It’s looking grim. Can you say Ecuador?

A Post from Above the Law Website: Commentary on ABA approved outsourcing

This article was featured on Above the Law website, surprisingly it concerns the plight of unemployed attorneys who must survive amidst the legal outsourcing phenomenon by corporate law firms. Hopefully this wasn’t already posted on another blog. I wonder to what extent outsourcing is receiving such attention now, is it because T-14 graduates are now having to be in the company of the non-prestigious lawyers and it is having a big effect on them? I remember attorneys telling me that the discovery review work was for a long period of time the work of first year associates, then became the work of the contractual attorneys–which helped firms bottom lines. So I initially thought, maybe as a result the firms would not hire as many associates who are likely from T-14, thus rendering them in pro bono, internship or contract attorney work. As outsourcing gained additional support, more attorneys across the economic and social spectrum have been affected–is this why more people care now? The author doesn’t seem to oppose the cost-cutting effects on most American attorneys but suggests it’s primarily an issue of quality. Agreeably the standards in most foreign countries are likely not as strict in it’s process. So I get from this that it’s ok to keep outsourcing as long as quality measures were actually put in place. So in the end, no one cares about the masses of American attorneys affected by it.

One Liners from Rejection Letters: A Breakdown

I had the idea to skim through this year’s past rejection letters from attorney positions I applied. Of course not all even acknowledged my resume or application, and of those that did I haven’t had one interview this past year. My interpretation of the “one-liners” is in black.
1) We have reviewed your application and found you qualified for the position listed above. However, you were not among the most highly qualified candidates. {The economy is bad, we can pick who we want, we can make the process so diffifult that we can hire only seasoned experts who are in their 50’s with 20 years experience and established connections}
2) The hiring official has selected another candidate for this position. {Don’t apply here again darn it, we hired someone, case closed}.
3) I regret we are not able to offer you employment at this time. {I have to put a human emotion in my verb to not make it sound as if your rejection letter isn’t a template}.
4) I regret we are not able to consider your application at this time. {Ditto}.
5) As impressive as your credentials were, we regret to inform you that we are unable to offer you the position advertised. {We are holding out on you, we know you qualified for other positions that were probably internal and we won’t dare refer you to the other agencies, lest you might actually get hired for a position you are qualified for}.
6) This is to notify you that our consideration of all applicants is completed and you were not selected for this position. {Thus, you have no reason to make a follow-up inquiry *door slam*}.
7) Unfortunately, at the present time there are no vacancies for an attorney position, but I am pleased you contacted us. { I know you are desperate for work, but we have a budget crisis and I am holding onto my position by the skin of my teeth}.
